Status Effects, Debuffs & Buffs




Buffs help your group while debuffs harm enemies. Crowd Control Effects are a special type of debuff which one might block, dodge, or break free from.

In further detail this guide covers:

One additional unclassified buff here mentioned is Battle Spirit which is upon you in any AvA/PvP area.




Elemental Status Effects

Of note, Resistance caps at 50% or a rating of 330000.

These chances can be increased with a Charged weapon trait or by using a Destruction Staff together with its passive skill of Elemental Force.

Status Effects can not be dodged even if all damage from the ability causing the status is dodged. They scale based on the caster's highest offensive stats, whether Max Stamina & Weapon Damage or Max Magicka & Spell Damage and use the highest (Weapon or Spell) Critical Strike Chance. Burning flame damage target suffers additional Flame Damage every 2 seconds for 4 seconds (cannot affect a shielded enemy)
Concussed shock damage target suffers Minor Vulnerability for 4 seconds (cannot affect a shielded enemy)
Chilled ice/frost damage target suffers Minor Maim for 4 seconds (cannot affect a shielded enemy)
Diseased disease damage target suffers Major Defile for 4 seconds
Poisoned poison damage target suffers additional Poison Damage over 6 seconds



Crowd Control Effects

Name Effect
Stun Target is unable to move, attack, or perform any actions; susceptible to further crowd control.
Feared Cowering in fear unable to move (when cast by player) or running away from the caster (when cast by monster) and unable to perform any actions.
Off Balance For up to 7 seconds, until damage is taken (which breaks the effect), this target is vulnerable to being Knocked Down by a Heavy Attack; Heavy Attacks on this target hit 70% harder regardless of if they are successfully Knocked Down and also restore double resources. Blocking a Heavy Attack will set the attacker Off Balance as will many Active Skills.

Note: Boss enemies can only be set Off Balance once every 15 to 20 seconds; otherwise has a max uptime of 4 out of 24 seconds
Disoriented Cannot move or perform any action but the effect will break when any damage is taken.
Silenced Unable to cast spells (use skills with a Magicka cost) but can move and use Light or Heavy Attacks and skills that cost Stamina or Ultimate.
Knock Down Knocked to the ground and cannot move or perform any actions. A Heavy Attack on an Off Balance enemy will cause them to be Knocked Down.
Knocked Back The target is pushed away from the caster. Standard range: 8 meters.
Immobilized
or Rooted
Unable to move; if cast by a player (not monster) will be followed by 3 seconds of immunity to immobilization. This appears in the game as a cloud near the character's feet.
Snared Slows the Movement Speed the target(s); the percentage slowed and its duration will vary.

Crowd Control effects can be avoided with Blocking (negates any CC, even if take partial damage from the attack) or with Dodging (move out of AoE before cast or to break immobility).

Once in place they can also be removed by Breaking Free (also grants 5 seconds immunity to CC) or Cleanse/Purge/Purify (removes negative effects).
